The Brilliant Terver Akase: A Journalist, Gov Ortom’s Spokesman & Guber Hopeful By Blessing Wikina
A serving Chief Press Secretary in Nigeria, has formally tendered his resignation letter, and joined the race to be the next Governor of his state. Akase, a former correspondent of FRCN, and appointed as the Chief Press Secretary by the Benue state Governor, has today become the first sitting CPS to a Governor, to resign and decide to succeed his boss.
Terver Akase is no stranger to playing leadership roles, even while serving as a reporter on the field, including his years in the BrickHouse, Port-Harcourt. He worked with me in the Press Corps of Govt House Port Harcourt and was involved in the daily, tedious task of covering a Governor.
Calm, resilient and efficient with an eye for journalistic details,Terver carved a space and name for himself in the media, that barely months upon his arrival in the city of Port-Harcourt, he was elected as the Chairman of the vibrant Federated Correspondents Chapel of the Rivers Council of the NUJ, a feat that hadn’t been attained before, that a “newcomer” will be preferred above older colleagues as head of the Correspondents Chapel of NUJ.
It wasn’t surprising that the Benue Community resident in Rivers State in 2012 decided to honour him while he served in Port Harcourt, by decorating him in the traditional Tiv regalia as Ambassador of Benue State.
Years Earlier, in 2008, the Rotary Club in Enugu honored him as the Best Journalist South East/ South-South.
But eyeing the Benue state Government House appears to be part of unseen divine dream that benevolence may have prepared for Terver Akase.
News of his resignation is still being gossiped openly among media men as some are won’t to say “why”.
But as Shakespeare said, “there is a tide in the affairs of men, which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune”.
2023 is still pregnant, and politicians are aligning, re-aligning, and concluding open deals, laced with interests. The interest of Terver in Benue, if elected, will be a classic case of dare to succeed.
With cognate experience gained serving as CPS to the Governor, plus his sojourn in Rivers State Govt House, Terver may have concluded his internship, and now good-to-go.
Who knows, with his emergence, another history would have been written in Nigeria.
The thing about history is that History makers hadly know that they are making history……time does.

Journalists have been the watchdogs of the society. It is now time for the society to watch how a journalist will govern his state.
