The Enugu State Government has unveiled an ambitious N9 billion renovation plan for the iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, as part of its preparations to host the 2026 National Sports Festival.
In a bold move to reposition the state as a sporting hub in Nigeria, the government has finalized contractual agreements with the China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) to commence a comprehensive overhaul of the stadium.

According to a report by Sportsday, the project will include a wide range of upgrades such as the installation of natural grass on the main bowl pitch, the construction of tartan tracks, a modern digital scoreboard, and a new roof for the facility. The scope of work will also feature the development of an Olympic-size swimming pool, and the provision of a 1000KVA generator to guarantee uninterrupted power supply to the complex.
The facelift, valued at approximately N9 billion, is expected to transform the stadium into a world-class sports facility, aligning with international standards and ensuring Enugu is well-positioned to host athletes and fans from across the country for the prestigious National Sports Festival.
This initiative is part of the state’s broader commitment to youth development, sports advancement, and infrastructural growth. Stakeholders in the sports sector have lauded the government’s move, describing it as timely and strategic.
Observers believe the upgraded stadium will not only serve the immediate need of hosting the Sports Festival but will also boost local sports tourism and create opportunities for talent discovery and development within the region.
Work on the stadium is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with government officials assuring strict compliance with project timelines and quality standards.
