Edo Welcomes All, But Security Must Not Be Compromised — Gov Okpebholo Clears Air on Peter Obi’s Visit

The Edo State Government has refuted claims suggesting that Governor Monday Okpebholo issued threats against former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, insisting that recent remarks by the governor were misunderstood and taken out of context.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that his comments were a call for adherence to security protocols, particularly by high-profile visitors to the state.
“As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, it is my constitutional duty to protect lives and property,” the governor stated. “This includes ensuring that high-profile visits, which may attract large crowds or media attention, are properly coordinated with security agencies.”
The governor cited the alarming rise in attacks and kidnappings of religious leaders, especially Catholic priests, as a key reason for insisting on security clearance for notable visitors. He warned that public engagements and donations carried out without security consultation could expose both religious leaders and the general public to avoidable risks.
Quoting the Bible, Governor Okpebholo reminded the public of the virtue of discreet giving, referencing Matthew 6:2-4 to underline the importance of private charity in a tense security climate.
“Security concerns transcend politics. My comments should not be twisted by those seeking political mileage. We won’t allow activities that endanger lives in Edo State,” he warned.
Governor Okpebholo also took a swipe at Peter Obi, recalling how Obi, during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, ordered the detention of former FCT Minister, Nasir El-Rufai, a situation he suggested stands in contrast to his own commitment to responsible governance.
Reaffirming his administration’s openness, Okpebholo assured that Edo State remains a welcoming place for all Nigerians, provided that proper security procedures are observed.
The statement concluded with a strong message against politicizing security issues and reiterated the governor’s commitment to restoring peace and order in Edo State.
“Edo is open to all, but security must never be compromised,” the governor declared.
