NIGERIA A DEVELOPING COSMOPOLITAN NATION, A COUNTRY THAT HAS SEEN IT ALL IN THE 70’s AND 80s, WHERE THINGS AND POLICIES WORKS, DIVISION OF LABOUR, WAR AGAINST INDICIPLINE, BETTER STANDARDS OF LIVING, MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES WHERE IN FULL OPERATION WITH PEOPLE ORIENTED POLICIES, BACKED UP WITH A BETTER SOCIAL AND BASIC AMENITIES IN PLACE, WORKFLOW AND WORKING CONDITIONS OF SERVICE UNDOUABLE.

THE GOVERNMENT WAS FOR THE PEOPLE AND BY THE PEOPLE, AS SOUTHERN PEOPLE CONGRESS (SPC) TAKES A REALITY CHECK OF WHAT WENT WRONG:

In the good old days things where by far better and affordable as well as most policies of the government where people oriented, back then, our industries and institutions where in optimum working capacity, where people pay more attention to working flow and man power inputs, the clocking systems where fully invoke and was calculative and instrumental, from the top high ranks to the smallest officer in the organization uses the clocking system and its card, whereby you put in your best maximum and efficiencies work hours and clock out ones your duty is over for the day.

That way, it brings out proficiency, productivity and performance metrics in that system, there would be no way you can abstain yourselves from your duty post, it brought out the best in both the senior and the junior workers in a sector.

And that was how it is being practiced in some developing countries up till today, again it has helped in checkmating unnecessary bureaucracy that has bedeviled our working standards in Nigeria.

In all government agencies these days, mostly the heads are perpetual late comers, the senior officers’ reports for duties late as well as other departmental staffs, as a result of lack of the clocking system.
In the 80’s the then second in command to the Head of State used to go from office to office sacking and replacing all the heads of government ministries and agencies that reports late for duties.
It was highly practiced in schools then, a lot of principals lost their jobs as a result of reporting late for duties, Nigerians where very conscious of their duties, and resumption time, and the man hours they put in at work.

This days, you go the government hospitals, you will find a lot of patients waiting for the matrons or nurses and sometimes the doctors, due to late reporting for duties, while the civil servants reports for duties whenever they feel necessary and disappear at random, nobody controls the, in and out movements, the clocking system is dead, also the attendance register can be manipulated at free will, therefore it cannot be trusted to capture attendance.
Nobody wants to be a carrier civil servant again, no dignity to labour, the standards are dying every day; the culture has faded away, because the policies are no longer encouraging!

Negligent and un-seriousness, nepotism and sabotage have obviously taken over dignity to labour. Our industries standards has fallen below average, punctuality has no reward again to Nation buildings, customers comes to the bank waiting outside before the bank will be opened for them to transact business and the failure continues at all sectors.

The congregations will be seated waiting for the pastor to arrive; we put in less working hours, that is why we get less attention to details. “You cannot put up a bad habit all the time and be expecting to get a better result.

Nobody wants to devote their full energy to labour, an employee begs to apply and after getting such job, rather than putting in their best quality time to the progress of that organization, they comes up with unnecessary tactics to buy off time to reduce his working hours, that will short changes the organization.

Today, you cannot find any government ministries and agencies that operates in optimum capacity, they have all fallen short of expectations, capacity standards has dropped drastically, lateness in all ministries must be curtailed as punishments measures should be put in place.

Lateness is a reproach; it kills the growing process of a nation. It shows signs of un-seriousness and no determination to excel; ones you short change productivity working hours, the consequences are that you can no longer recover from the time lost!

Some of our problems are mostly due to wrong timings! Not having the proper to know what time to start and finish projects, otherwise how can a project that is supposed to take agreeable timeframe to be completed, ends up taking indefinite years to be completed.

No developing country in the world has ever copied our styles or our policies, why on earth should we be having abandon projects here and there, all over the country? It only goes to show how un-serious and defocus we are as a nation! Our government has failed to make and implement policies that will be people’s oriented as it is done in other parts of the world.

It is only in Nigeria that you hear, things hardly work according to plans, we need to go back to the clocking system, where by timings and deadlines will be taken very seriously, if we must grow as a nation.

It must be practiced across all the government ministries and agencies for proficiency and dedication to labour, we must bring back our glorious days,

We zing to bring back the clocking system; we should be paid according to our work input as we can no longer afford the luxury of man power sabotage.

The government needs to cut down some excesses, to lay an inexorable plan.

Hon. George Wilson
